Techno-Activism Third Mondays (TA3M) are informal meetups that occur on the same date in many cities worldwide. At TA3M in San Francisco this month, we'll learn about a novel campaign promoting renewable energy within the technology sector.

This month we welcome Marietje Schaake, Member of the European Parliament for the Dutch Democratic Party (D66) and Kaja Kallas, Member of the European Parliament elected from Estonia. Both speakers belong to the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) and will be discussing a variety of digital issues including freedom of speech, internet governance, intermediary liability, net neutrality, and export controls.

Bios:

Kaja Kallas is an Estonian politician. She is currently a Member of the European Parliament elected from Estonia and belongs to the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE). She has previously worked as an attorney-at-law and been a Member of the Parliament in Estonia (Riigikogu), where she chaired the Economic Affairs Committee. She is also Vice-Chairman of the Estonian Reform Party. As an attorney, she specialised in European and Estonian competition law. In the European Parliament Kaja Kallas serves on the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) and is Vice-Chair of the Delegation to the EU– Ukraine Parliamentary Cooperation Committee. She is also a substitute for the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) and the Delegation for Relations with the United States. The European Parliament recently voted on her jointly drafted strategic report "Towards a Digital Single Market Act" that calls for ambitious actions to remove barriers in the digital world as well as to avoid hindering the technological revolution by overregulating the sector.

Marietje Schaake has served as a Member of the European Parliament for the Dutch Democratic Party (D66) with the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) since 2009. She is the ALDE Coordinator on the Committee on International Trade and the spokesperson on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). She additionally serves on the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Subcommittee on Human Rights. Marietje Schaake is the founder of the European Parliament Intergroup on the Digital Agenda for Europe. She is Vice-President of the US Delegation and serves on the Iran Delegation and the Delegation for the Arab peninsula. She is a Member of the Global Commission on Internet Governance and a Young Global Leader with the World Economic Forum.
